A village official named Sasuke gave his life to protect the residents of his village. In appreciation of his actions, the Goin Festival was started on the date of the town’s founding on September 15 (today October 15). Paper lanterns are hung from the eaves of houses and in his memory people eat special mochi rice cakes known as “imogai-mochi,” made from taro potato and pounded rice.
