The museum was designed by British architect Peter Salter in 1993 and was modeled after the layout of Zuisenji Temple, an Inami landmark. The architect used Japanese materials and building techniques and created a strong contrast between inside and outside by integrating an inner courtyard with exhibition room "pavilions."
