Bodhidharma Painting (Shonenji Temple), Seibi

Shonenji Temple is a Jodoshin sect temple built in the year 701. This painting of Bodhidharma uses painting techniques popular in the Momoyama era when Catholicism was propagated. The face of this strange-looking monk with the penetrating gaze is painted in oil, stretching across the canvas in profile.
