Many years ago there stood to the east of Sanga a Japanese cedar said to be about 800 years old. People living in the area treated it with great respect, revering it as a sacred tree. There are also tales that a demon resided in the tree. In any event, the tree was torn down during the great improvement project undertaken on the Sofu River in 1972-73.
