Iguchi Shrine was called Wakamiya Hachiman Shrine in old days. This ink stone is considered to date back to the Nara era. "Gaken" usually refers to an ink stone made from a fragment of roof tile, but this is a rare one baked as an ink stone from the outset. There is a groove cut around the top, so probably there was a lid made to match.
