Hokyointo (Rengeji Temple), Nomura

Rengeji Temple was established in 1231 when a priest brought the ashes of Minamoto Yoritomo and a Buddhist image here from Kamakura, tradition says. This tower was also built to console the soul of Minamoto Yoritomo. This type of stone tower, which originated in China, is called Hokyointo because the Hokyoin Daranikyo sutra is stored in it. In the mid-Kamakura era, such towers were built as gravestones.
