Together with the Buddha statues in Nara and Kamakura, the Takaoka Daibutsu stands as one of Japan's three Great Buddhas. However, the road that led from the conflagration of 1900 to the statue's rebuilding in 1933 was a long one. Matsuki Sozaemon, a believer, is the individual who got this major project underway and worked devotedly on it.
