The protagonist is a young man not far removed from his boyhood. For the first time in two years, he visits his older sister in Fushiki, where she has married into a family operating a large restaurant. The story depicts the brief love affair with an apprentice geisha during his stay there. The seashore depicted in the work is now a petroleum terminal.
