When Maeda Toshinaga built his castle in Takaoka, he invited in the townspeople from neighboring castle towns and created a merchants' town. Takaoka became a distribution point for rice and cotton, and prospered as a center of commerce. Yama-cho was the merchants' town that throughout these developments provided a base for the prosperity of the commercial capital that is Takaoka.
