Since time immemorial the Shogawa river has overflowed its banks, and because of this the river's course has been altered over the years. A great amount of damage was produced downstream by floods even into the Meiji era. The novel at hand is a work of naturalistic literature, set on the site of the improvement project begun in 1900 in the downstream area of the Shogawa River and lasting for 13 years.
