The Hokuriku highway was also called the Okan by the Kaga clan. Along the Okan, mounds were constructed on both sides of it at one ri (approx. 4 km) intervals to serve as distance markers. These are called "Ichinzuka" (milestone). Each consisted of a round mound of earth with a nettle tree planted at its center.
