It is said that during outbreaks of measles in the village of Koreto, people would affix a piece of paper with a hand print called a kumonryu to their gates to ward off the disease. During the Edo era (1603-1868), Kumonryu was a sumo wrestler with the rank of ozeki who came from the neighboring village of Yukikane.
