To commemorate both the 360th anniversary of the founding of the town of Takaoka and the 80th anniversary of its redesignation as a city, the city erected this bell in 1969. Praying for world peace and social prosperity, the bell was given the name of "Heiwa no kane," or the Bell of Peace. Scenes from the life of Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, were painted around the bell.
