It is said there were two settlements known as Kokubu Hachiman-mura and Kurahama-mura in the area around the male rock and the female rock when it was still land. According to another story, the Ariso Shrine was in shaminohana and first torii of the Fushiki Keta Shrine was beside the male rock. These are said to have sunk into the sea one night during a large earthquake.
