With the region's connections to ancient poet Otomo no Yakamochi and Japan's oldest court-sponsored poetry collection, the Manyoshu, there are a number of events that are held to celebrate these ties. Among these events is the Takaoka Manyo Festival, in which some 2,000 Takaoka residents gather together to recite all 4,516 poems collected in the 20 volumes of the Manyoshu. The recitations take 60 hours to complete.
