In the village of Beniya-mura there was a large natural spring known as "Hikarigama." One day, a young woman named Okaru, who worked at Saidaiji Temple nearby, took a pot of rice down to the spring to wash, but dropped it in by accident. When she reached her hand in to fetch it, she fell in herself. The pot lay at the bottom of the spring with a snake curled around it.
