Legend has it that the monk Unkai heard a divine voice when passing under this large ginkgo tree telling him to protect the tree. He then tied a sacred rope around the trunk, made offerings of sacred sake, and enshrined the tree as a deity. The story is also told that during the Great Fire of 1879 a spray of water came from the tree, saving the vicinity from the spread of the fire.
