Ki-machi was the first town to be created when Takaoka Castle was built. Lumber dealers and sea shippers from Toyama Kimachi gathered here and named the town Ki-machi. They were given the rights to handle all commercial shipping on the Senbo River, and transported rice and salt. The locality was also the entranceway to Takaoka. Port functions, however, later moved to Fushiki-ura.
