Back in the agricultural days of the Taisho era (1912-1926), when too many dry, hot days persisted without rain in the growing season, people would pray for rain. They would take a long trip to Togakushi Shrine in Nagano Prefecture, fill a magnum-sized cask with spring water, bring it home, and pray.
