Hokurikudo highway was used by feudal lords for traveling to and from Edo. Hokurikudo highway, also called okan, enters Takaoka at Yokota-machi. This part of the highway was lined with pine trees until the Meiji era. There was also a sonkyojo ("prostrating place") where magistrates and officials of the town prostrated to welcome or see off the feudal lord.
