Born into a surgeon family, in Nagasaki-ke. Tadamasa became the adopted son of Hayashi Tachu and was sent by the Toyama Clan to study at the school that is today Tokyo University. In 1878 he went to France to serve as an interpreter at the Paris Expo, and became an art dealer. He put effort into introducing Ukiyo-e and other Japanese arts to the world.
