Takamine Jokichi (1854-1922), Hiramai

In 1918 he proclaimed Toyama an area suitable for aluminum production, and played a leading role in establishing the aluminum industry that is so prominent today. At his own expense he gave cherry trees as a gift to New York and Washington, D.C., working to promote goodwill between Japan and the United States. He is considered Japan's ""unheralded ambassador.
