The neighborhoods of Moriyama, Kifune, and Konmadashi were once prosperous as the commercial center of Takaoka. The storehouse-style townhouses that line the streets in this area date back to the Great Fire of 1900, after which only fire-proofed houses could be built. The Sugano House is a particularly fine example that displays the wealth of the Takaoka merchants of the Meiji Period.
