Nyoi no watashi is a location of historic importance. The Gikeiki, a chronicle from the Muromachi era (1392-1573), relates that when Minamoto Yoshitsune fled to the northern provinces, his identity was nearly discovered by the sentry, Taira no Gonnokami. The day was saved thanks to the quick thinking of Benkei, his retainer, who struck his master with his fan and thereby quelled Gonnokami's suspicions.
