Sedge Hat, Fukuoka

Production of sedge hats in Fukuoka-machi began more than 400 years ago. Feudal lord Maeda Toshiie encouraged it, and the number of sedge hat wholesalers in the town amounted to 60 and annual production to 3 million hats in the Meiji period.
