In the old days, geisha wishing for a happy marriage had their hair done in the marumage style, a symbol of married women. They prayed to the Kannon at Senshuji Temple in the city on their only holiday in the year. The festival evolved from this custom. Young girls of the city as well as other parts of the prefecture participate in the festivities.
