About 800 years ago, Heike (Taira forces) samurai warriors defeated in the battles of Yashima and Dannoura fled and settled in Gokayama in Etchu. They tilled fields with spades and hoes in their hands instead of bows and arrows. The song they sang is said to be the origin of Mugiya song. Singers are dressed in traditional formal attire, wearing a sword and holding a sedge hat, like the warriors.
