Ohi pottery began when the fifth lord of Kaga, Maeda Tsunanori , invited the founders of the Urasenke school of tea ceremony, Senso Soshitsu and Sen Senso, from Kyoto in 1666 with the talented apprentice Raku-style potter, Chozaemon, accompanying them. Chozaemon found suitable clay at Ohi village in northern Kanazawa and set up a kiln there.
