In the early 17th century, Toshitsune, third feudal lord of the Maeda family, invited famed Kyoto lacquer master Igarashi Doho to introduce his exquisite painting techniques to local artisans in Kanazawa. Kanazawa Shikki was a high quality lacquerware patronized by the Maeda family. The new decorating techniques were Maki-e gold lacquer, Rankaku eggshell lacquer, and gold and silver inlay/relief.
