Though its origins are not completely clear, this traditional craft is believed to have come from Kyoto in the latter half of the 16th century. Gold leaf production began to flourish in Kanazawa thanks to a policy of patronage by successive rulers that promoted excellence in local artisans' gold-pounding techniques.
