In 1858, poor people in the entire Hokuriku region rose in revolt as prices of rice had risen sharply. In Takaoka, 42 merchant houses were attacked. Nagaya Hachinai, the local magistrate, distributed rice to people immediately and caught the revolt leaders to put down the uprising.
