The novel Aogiri (Blue Paulownia), which won Japan's prestigious literary award, the Akutagawa Prize, was set in the Nishi Tohezo district in the southern part of Takaoka city. The story is about a woman who refuses treatment for cancer and lives out her life bearing the pain, and about the heroine who overcomes her own unhappiness in the process of nursing her sick aunt.
