The pickle is often purchased as a souvenir or gift. Hatogarashi tsukudani: Shiitake mushrooms may also be added to this spicy relish. The touch of pepperiness makes this blend of chili leaves simmered in soy sauce quite tasty. It makes for an excellent complement to warm rice or a bowl of ochazuke (a kind of porridge based around green tea poured over rice). The relish also works well as a snack to go with sake.
