"Savoring the fragrance of early rice plants, walking alongside Arisoumi (now Toyama Bay), which sweeps away to the right." Oku no Hosomichi, a haiku travelogue tracing the journey to Ohu and Hokuriku, was completed in 1694 just before Basho's sudden death. This was the only poem he composed in Etchu. There are eight monuments on which this poem is engraved in the prefecture, erected from respect to the poet.
