Born in Kanazawa in 1882, Kishi Tamaki moved to Takaoka in 1900. The following year, she was married to a Japanese-style painter but he passed away. She then moved to Tokyo, where she met and married the painter Takehisa Yumeji and began a life that was in constant flux. The city of Takaoka is sketched in the aforementioned novel as the city goes through a rapid change of appearance under modernization.
