Sellers of salted and dried fish products were known as "aimono-shi." These sellers were subject to a heavy tax on sardines and banded together to get the tax lifted. To show gratitude for the acceptance of their demand, starting in 1772 the townspeople began holding a festival to commemorate the anniversary of the second daimiyo, Maeda Toshinaga's death, on May 20.
