Setsumon Gensho (the novel's protagonist) became the chief priest at Kokutaiji Temple at the tender age of 35. The main temple of the Rinzai sect, Kokutaiji Temple is located on Mt. Futagami, which was mentioned in the Manyoshu. Setsumon was said to have had a profound influence on many thinkers.
