Manyoshu is the earliest anthology of Japanese verse. Otomo no Yakamochi is said to have compiled it, but it is not clear when it was compiled. Among the 4,516 poems collected in Manyoshu, those created by Otomo no Yakamochi in Etchu amount to 223. They are among the 289 Etchu-related poems included in Manyoshu. They are called Etchu Manyo-ka and are valuable clues to learn about the region in ancient times.
