The sea at Ota was formerly prime fishing ground for sardines, bonito, squid, and other fish. Fixed net fishing was the most common method used, but gill net fishing, in which a net is lowered in an area where the fish to be caught are swimming, was also used. The Meiwa area also flourished as a fishing area, and it was a prime location for agar-agar, the ingredient used for making kanten and tokoroten.
