About 500-600 children in primary school and middle school compete in team and individual poem-recognition events. The 100 Etchu Manyo cards used in the tournament contain poems from the Manyoshu about Toyama Prefecture, primarily written by Otomo no Yakamochi and have pictures that help with recall.
