Hondo Tanuki, Raccoon Dog, Nyctereutes procyonoides (Canidae)
The raccoon dog is a familiar creature to Japanese people, appearing in many folk tales and children's songs. It belongs to the Canidae family that includes dogs and foxes, but has a pudgy, round body with a short, thick tail and short legs. It lives near human habitation and is completely nocturnal.
