Plants of Mt. Futagami in Fall, Takaoka Area

Abemaki, Chinese cork oak, Quercus variabilis blume (Fagaceae)
This tall deciduous tree grows in groups in ridges in mountainous areas. It resembles the sawtooth oak, but it has a thick cork layer in the gray-black bark, which has an irregular surface. In April and May, a three to six centimeter male inflorescence droops from the base of new branches, and one female flower blooms from the upper part.
