Abemaki, Chinese cork oak, Quercus variabilis blume (Fagaceae) This tall deciduous tree grows in groups in ridges in mountainous areas. It resembles the sawtooth oak, but it has a thick cork layer in the gray-black bark, which has an irregular surface. In April and May, a three to six centimeter male inflorescence droops from the base of new branches, and one female flower blooms from the upper part.
