Shokoji temple has a long history and belongs to the Honganji school of the Buddhist Jodo Shin sect. Tradition has it that its origin is Doyama Gobo established by Rennyo, the eighth head priest of Honganji Temple, in Doyama (now a part of Fukumitsu-machi). The temple had close association with powerful people of those days, and the paintings, handicrafts and many other treasures left at the temple testify to it.
