According to tradition, Chokyuji Temple was established by Buddhist priest Tesso Tairyo, one of the founders of Kaga Sojiji temple. The feudal lord Maeda Toshinaga provided protection for Chokyuji, and his handwriting remains in the temple. Lord Takakura, who led the conquest of Aizu, composed a waka (tanka poetry of thirty-one sylables) admiring the ume (plum) blossom of the temple garden:
