The Mikurumayama doll of Konmadashi-machi is mechanical monkey that can turn its heads left and right, pounds a drum and moves its mouth as if eating hard candy. This monkey is said to have been made in 1804 by Kurokawa Hatsuemon. The craftsman based the doll on a real monkey pounding a drum. The monkey was fed candy, so perhaps this is also the basis for the mechanical motion of the doll's mouth.
